Tell Your Story

Tell Your Story is a community-based musical collaboration, combining the voices and stories of South Carolinians to create a sound document - a sonic memoir. Three Spoleto Festival USA orchestral fellows were paired with three members of the Johns Island community - identified by Our Lady of Mercy Comunity Outreach - and recorded the histories and sounds important to the residents of Johns Island. The fellows wove these sounds together to create sonic memoirs meant to preserve the oral history and creative practices of their collaborators. I had the opportunity to curate and co-facilitate the inaugural year of Tell Your Story, and am grateful to support the creation of a project that builds connections and archives the experiences of South Carolinians.
